Frequently Asked Questions

You’re not alone — and that’s why these FAQs exist.

Let’s tackle everything head-on so you have the answers you need.

How big is Sawtooth Value Advisory?

Sawtooth Value Advisory is a boutique valuation firm led by me, Jeremy Burnstein, a valuation expert with over two decades of experience. As a solo practitioner, I provide personalized, senior-level attention to every client.

I collaborate with a trusted network of valuation professionals and subject matter experts for complex engagements. This approach combines larger firms' specialized resources with a boutique practice's tailored service.

What are your qualifications and experience in business valuations?

I founded Sawtooth Value Advisory LLC in 2022, bringing over two decades of experience in valuation and advisory services for middle-market companies across diverse industries. My work has supported strategic transactions and addressed complex tax and financial reporting needs. Earlier in my career, I served as a commercial credit officer with Bayview FMAC and Citicorp North America, underwriting senior secured loans for acquisitions, refinancings, and recapitalizations.

I hold an MS in Accountancy & Taxation from Boise State University, an MS in Finance from Seattle University, and a BA in Business Administration from California State University, Fullerton. I am a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) charterholder, a Certified Valuation Analyst (CVA), and I hold additional certifications, including a Strategic Decision and Risk Management certificate from Stanford University.

Are you a “qualified appraiser"?

Yes, I meet the requirements of a “qualified appraiser” as defined by the Internal Revenue Code.

What are the key values that guide Sawtooth Value Advisory?

Integrity. I hold myself to the highest ethical standards, ensuring honesty and transparency guide every interaction. My clients can trust that I always act in their best interests.

Excellence. I strive to deliver exceptional results in everything I do. I constantly challenge myself to improve, ensuring that my work meets and exceeds expectations.

Responsiveness. I believe communication is key, so I prioritize being available and responsive to my clients’ needs. They can rely on me to be there when it matters most.

Relationships. I value long-term relationships built on trust and collaboration. For me, it’s not just about the work—it’s about truly understanding and supporting my clients over time.

Generosity. I believe in giving back. Whether it’s sharing knowledge, offering my time, or providing resources, I’m committed to helping others succeed.

How long does a typical engagement take?

The timeline depends on the scope and complexity of the services required. Most engagements are completed within three to four weeks. I provide a clear timeline during our initial consultation to set expectations.

Will I hear from you during the process?

Yes, I ensure consistent communication throughout the engagement. You’ll be updated on progress and can always reach out with questions or concerns.

What is your fee structure?

I charge a fixed fee, which remains unchanged unless the scope of work changes. I do not bill extra for review time with you or your advisors.

Do you guarantee your work?

I stand behind the quality of my work and my commitment to your satisfaction. While specific outcomes cannot be guaranteed, I offer these assurances:

On-Time Guarantee: If I fail to deliver my analysis within the agreed timeline, I will reduce my fee by 5% for each calendar day that delivery is delayed. We will agree on a revised timeline if changes to the scope of work or additional requests arise. While I am committed to timeliness, the quality and thoroughness of your analysis remain my top priorities.

Tax Authority Challenge Guarantee: I will defend my conclusion in any non-litigation proceeding initiated by a U.S. tax authority (such as an IRS audit or administrative appeal). You will not be responsible for my professional fees related to this defense, only for reasonable and pre-approved out-of-pocket expenses.
